I earned all-conference honors in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) once for cross country and once for indoor track, with Simon Fraser University (which at the time was part of the NCAA Division II, the only foreign member institution ever). After completing my undergraduate degree, I began training in long track and inline speedskating with the Wisconsin Speed Skating Club. I was training at the Pettit National Ice Center in the winters and on inline speedskates in the summers, training for the Apostle Islands Inline Marathon and the North Shore Inline Marathon.
